Exit
So long, and thanks for all the fish
And here we are, at the end of our journey. Whether the business evolved from a hobby or was designed specifically for acquisition, the Exit is the final act of independence – the ultimate sale – the heart-wrenching good bye to an old friend. At times, it is exciting, joyful, and painful all at once.
The Exit also represents the culmination of enormous effort by many people who have poured their blood, sweat and tears into a project they now see moving on to the next stage in its life cycle – being owned by someone else. Nothing will be the same after this event. The Exit is the goal, and here we are!
What does this mean?
Just like anything else, an Exit is a process. Reaching this stage is only the beginning of an emotionally driven journey involving the negotiating of the biggest transition in a life of a business. Everything changes after this – the corporate culture, executive management, employee relationships, and even the company’s core activities.
That’s a lot to process.
What’s involved?
For the owners, there is an undeniable finality: retirement, a substantial pay out, succession, or simply a sigh of relief. For employees, it is a time of excitement, uncertainty, and definite change. But, it also means a great deal of work. The original owners’ vision may include building a legacy – an evolution of an original idea, the Big Picture.
At the same time, it may involve more mundane tasks like employee contracts, clearing personal belongings from the warehouse, and reconnecting with longtime customers and vendors – relationships built over many years. The Exit process is cathartic, time-consuming, and can be rewarding in its own right.
Who should use our services?
This is the time to think everything through. Slow down and reflect – talk to professionals, employees, stakeholders, family, and friends. The finality of the agreement should not be taken lightly. If there is ever a time to be deliberate in your actions, this is it.
